Get ‘Closer’ with Christopher

Comment

Inspired by artistes such as John Mayer and Justin Timberlake, Christopher is taking the world by storm with the release of his new album ‘Closer’.

If the name Christopher on it’s own doesn’t ring a bell, then it’s more than likely that you’ve heard his voice. Not sure what we’re talking about? The video below is sure to ring more than a few bells.

Yeap, he was the featuring artist on this hit song back in 2014. Better known by just his first name, Christopher Nissen is now taking the world by storm as a solo artist. At the age of 17, Christopher decided to listen to a family friend and chose the path less taken. However, the unconventional method proved to be the right decision when he signed his first record deal at the age of 18.

“I felt like I had no choice because I wanted this so bad. I was close to auditioning for shows such as X-Factor and Idol but I was really sure at that time it was not the right path for me. One of my father’s friends suggested that I should  go to a label, knock on their door, bring my guitar, and ask if I can play for them. That’s exactly what I did and a couple of weeks later my father got a call from them saying that they wanted to sign me. That’s how it all started,” shared Christopher.

Christopher was down in Malaysia to promote his new album and we think it’s safe to say that his journey here was indeed a pleasant one.

“The first day I was here, I heard my song ‘I Won’t Let You Down’ on the radio twice and I was just in awe. I just played on Akademi Fantasia and from the crowd’s reaction you could really feel that they knew the song. Honestly, it’s surreal,” he said.

What then, you may ask, makes him stand out from the other male pop acts currently out there?

“ I bring something new to the table just by being me. It’s all about my honesty and especially with the release of ‘Closer’, it’s personal on another level. It’s my story and it’s something that I put a lot of thought into during the production of the album,” Christopher said.

At the end of the day, it’s music. I grew up listening to Michael Jackson, John Mayer, and Justin Timberlake so there will always be a little bit of them in my music: I’m just a product of what I grew up listening to,” he added.

Whether or not you’ve heard of Christopher, we’re sure you’ll find our Q&A with him below an interesting read.

Seeing as a lot of your inspiration comes when you sit down with your guitar, what was your first guitar and who got it for you?

My grandmother got me my first guitar when I was 12. It was a black Yamaha. I tried  going for guitar lessons couple of time before I went “Nope, I’m just going to play soccer instead.” I then started learning by songs and the first song that I learned to play on the guitar was Jason Mraz’s ‘I’m Yours’. I learnt to do that on YouTube and after learning to play a few songs, I started to get the hang of playing the guitar.

You’re known for singing everywhere, has there ever been an awkward moment?

I’m actually way past the feeling of awkwardness and don’t really care anymore. Singing is like breathing for me – I can’t even help it. There would be times when my dad would tell me to stop singing back when I was a kid, especially when we were having dinner, and then I’d apologize and continue humming almost immediately. I think it’s a good sign because when I see someone singing it gives the impression that they’re happy. When I’m not singing, that’s when you know that something’s wrong.

Could you tell us a little bit about the tattoos on your arms and why you got them?

The one on my right arm is James Dean and I had a poster of him on my bedroom wall when I was a teenager. I actually love his quote “Dream as if you’ll live forever. Live as if you’ll die today.” I was about to get the quote too but this picture in itself is so iconic. When I got my first label deal at the age of 18, I decided to put him on my arm forever to remind myself to live life, enjoy every moment, believe in myself, and believe that everything’s possible. The one on my left hand is my mum and dad.

If the label had not signed you 6 years ago and you hadn’t gotten into music, what would you be doing?

I would probably be in law school right now. That was what I wanted to do because I love reading. Having said that, my best friend is studying law  now and he said that most of it is really boring so it might’ve been too much for me. I’d love to think that if I wasn’t a singer, I would be a songwriter, a musician, a producer or something along those lines because music has always been my biggest passion.

If you could collaborate with any female artiste, who would it be?

Beyoncé. She’s the queen. In terms of a Malaysian artiste, I would say Yuna.

Any plans for a full concert in Malaysia any time soon?

Nothing specific yet but I will be back for a show. It’s already being planned and will happen possibly at the beginning of next year.
